When you grow up you tend to get told the world is the way it is and you're life is just to live your life inside the world. Try not to bash into the walls too much. Try to have a nice family, have fun, save a little money.
That's a very limited life. Life can be much broader once you discover one simple fact: Everything around you that you call life was made up by people that were no smarter than you and you can change it, you can influence it, you can build your own things that other people can use.
Once you learn that, you'll never be the same again. – Steve Jobs
“The Great British Bake Off” is a popular cooking show broadcast on the BBC and for the American audience on PBS. In each episode, passionate amateur bakers tackle a different baking skill, which become progressively more difficult as the weeks pass. After each episode, the judges determine who stays in the competition and who is eliminated. These contestants love food and they love to bake. Racing against the clock, creating difficult to pull off baked goods under the glare of the cameras, not so much.
Last night, I binge-watched an episode I had previously recorded, witnessing a talented, introverted home baker challenge herself by baking an intricate Black Forest Gateaux. She broke out of her comfort zone and beating the other bakers to win. At that moment, the young baker was exhilarated. At that moment, she knew what Steve Jobs knew to be true: You can change your life and influence and inspire others. She did so by facing her fears and putting herself out there.
This young baker didn’t let preconceived notions of how her life should be dictate how she would actually live her life. Instead, despite fears, she chose to pursue her dreams. Perhaps you aren’t dreaming of a career as a professional baker? But we all dream. How often do you dream? What is it you dream of doing with your life? And why do we struggle so much with achieving those dreams?
Many of us fail to seek out our true purpose and passion in life because we listen to those who tell us to stay boxed in and not “push the walls too much”. We dream of our perfect life yet follow it up with a list of why our dream life is beyond our reach. We fill up our life with excuses. But many great companies were born from dreams, nurtured in a garage or basement and then grew into huge, successful corporations. Why not you? Why not your dream? The only limits you experience in life are those you allow others to impose on you.
Dreaming, of course, is the easy part. Acting on the dream is more challenging. You must recognize that a dream is a process. On the simplest level, it takes commitment, time, desire, and courage. People like Steve Jobs and even the young baker on “The Great British Bake Off” know that in order to break out of the walls society has us hemmed in by, we need to take the time to discover who we are and how we can best serve others. Instead of pushing our dreams aside, we must follow our hearts to create the kind of life that expresses the deep drive for a life of extraordinary success. power to achieve your dreams and live the life you were meant to live resides within you. Perhaps you need a little nudge or guidance in the right direction.
